NY I Love You

Scene from Woody Allen's Manhattan 1979
There is nothing more magical than summer dating in New York City. Since leaving the Big Apple six years ago I think that's what I miss most. Maybe I'm just a little naive because the last time I dated in NYC I was 20. Since then I've heard horror stories that NYC has since become one of the worst dating pools. When comparing dating in San Francisco to NYC, I have to say that dating in NYC is so much easier, it's fun, flirtatious and most importantly there's an abundance of physically and mentally stimulating HETEROSEXUAL specimen!... I capitalize heterosexual for good reason.

Some of the Good

1. The stereotype is true... We New Yorkers don’t know how to slow the hell down. We’re almost always in the zone. But when we’re on a date with someone we like, we tend to slow things down a bit. We suddenly become aware of the cute hidden Falafel restaurant on MacDougal Street and the park built on an elevated railway. When you’re with someone new in New York, it feels like you’re seeing everything for the first time. In a lot of way ways, you kind of are.

2. To me a date that requires an exorbitant budget is a little... expected? In my opinion only a dull person would think that an expensive dinner is fun. Expensive dinners are what you do when your mom's in town or when you’re proposing to your girlfriend. But a date? You should be stumbling around town because you’re drunk on booze and electricity. You should be at a dive bar listening to old school jams like  Elton John's 'Benny and the Jets.’ Any New Yorker worth dating knows this.

3. During the summer there is an abundance of young single people in NYC. Everyone is out and about... from outdoor cafes, to people watching at Union Square Park, sunbathing on the High Line, dancing at Bemba in Brooklyn, enjoying the NY skyline at Brooklyn Promenade...  it's just so easy to meet people.

4. Finally, there's nothing like making out in the back of a NYC yellow cab.
